Virat Kohli’s team looked ominous in the third game of IPL 2018, with their batsmen firing on all cylinders, but Kohli and AB de Villiers’s partnership was brought to an abrupt end by part-timer Nitish Rana. The KKR bowler managed to dismiss both of them, which made the difference between a score in excess of 200 and what they eventually ended up with. The helped KKR to chase down the target comfortably.
Both teams have had an indifferent season so far, although KKR still find themselves at fourth spot in the IPL 2018 standings. This is good enough to take them to the Playoffs. However, RCB have fared slightly poorer with just two wins out of their six matches. Virat Kohli and the RCB coaching staff have been particularly worried about the form of their bowlers, who have leaked runs aplenty, also resulting in the defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings and an MS Dhoni at his destructive best.
RCB finally had opener Quinton de Kock score a half-century against CSK, nearly completing the puzzle of a formidable batting line-up often misfiring. Corey Anderson has been hit-and-miss, as have Colin de Grandhomme and Chris Woakes. Moeen Ali, the England all-rounder, is waiting for an opportunity and may get one on Sunday in a bid to add depth to their batting, which they have found lacking in the middle order.
Umesh Yadav’s form notwithstanding, RCB’s bowlers have come in for severe punishment and their inability to check the flow of runs has cost the team dearly, which may prompt them to shuffle their bowling attack against KKR as well.
KKR, on the other hand, have fared slightly better, thanks to their superior spin bowling attack featuring Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav. They would, however, be waiting patiently for Andre Russell to prove his fitness as his role as a bowler adds a lot more variety to the attack.
The depth in the KKR batting order has been one of their strengths this season, with captain Dinesh Karthik, Russell and Shubman Gill all contributing at critical stages of games. They would, however, be hoping for one of their top three to bat longer in a bid to get to a strong total.
