Following the ball tampering incident which first saw Rajasthan Royals removing Steve Smith as their skipper, now David Warner has stepped down as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the forthcoming India Premier League season. Warner will not be taking charge of the Sunrisers Hyderabad when the IPL season begins on April 7. The franchise will announce a new captain “shortly” said the statement.
“In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the Team will be announced shortly,” said K.Shanmugam, CEO of the SunRisers Hyderabad. The decision came after Cricket Australia banned Smith, Warner and Cameron Bancroft for the sandpaper gate scandal and were sent home from their tour of South Africa.
Earlier, fellow teammate and India wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha had said that the decision will not effect the franchise. Meanwhile, SRH are slated to play their first match against Rajasthan Royals — the franchise who earlier removed Smith as the captain and replaced India top order batsman Ajinkya Rahane in the position.
